A Decade of AMRUT and the Foundations of Urban India

Ten years since its launch, the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation has played a decisive role in strengthening India’s urban backbone. Focused primarily on non-metro cities, AMRUT has addressed long-standing gaps in water supply, sewerage, storm water drainage, and urban mobility, directly improving daily living conditions for millions across secondary and tertiary urban centres. ₹2.73 lakh crore worth of projects sanctioned; ₹1.12 lakh crore worth of works completed.

More than an infrastructure program, AMRUT has reshaped how cities plan and deliver essential services. By prioritising sustainable water management, sanitation, and public transport, the mission has improved public health, reduced environmental stress, and enhanced urban connectivity. Equally significant is its institutional impact, building capacity within municipal bodies and standardising service delivery. As India’s urban population continues to grow, AMRUT stands as a critical foundation for inclusive, balanced, and resilient urban development beyond the metros.
