Prof. Goutam Dutta is an Emeritus faculty member of IIM, Ahmedabad after serving there as a full-time faculty member for 24 years. He was a faculty at London School of Economics and Political Science, UK (1996-97) and visiting Professor at University of Illinois, USA (2001), HEC Paris (2011). He was an international visitor to Chinese University of Hong Kong, (2004) and Loughborough University(UK) in 2018.
He worked in Tata Iron for 11 years in project engineering, information technology (IT) and at the General Manager (Operations) Office for 11 years. At IIMA, he was the Chairperson of the Production and Quantitative Methods Area , Research and Publications Committee(2007-10) and Doctoral Program (2020-22). During his tenure as Chairperson of Agri-Business Management (2010-2013), IIM, Ahmedabad was ranked No.1 in the world for the first time.
He was in the panel for Prime Minister of India’s Trophy for selecting the best steel plant in India(2015-16), founding member of Indian Academic Board PMI-USA (2009-2013).
He has conducted executive education/consulted/written cases with several reputed Indian and International companies. He has trained over 3700 executives in Project Management, Revenue management and dynamic pricing and emerging Leadership Program. Other than India, he also delivered invited lectures/taught students/executives of USA, UK, France, China, Nepal, Oman, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Canada, France, and Romania. He has been invited as keynote and plenary speaker for several national and international conferences and visited several universities in India and 17 other foreign countries.
He has keen interest in promoting Project Management Culture in India and have worked with the Government of Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Tripura in developing and delivering programs.
The work done by his team members in energy Modeling at Tata Steel resulted in 73 million dollars of savings for which Tata Steel became joint winner of the prestigious Franz Edelman Award of Institute of Management Science and Operations Research (INFORMS) USA in 1994. Tata Steel became the first and only Asian Company to get this laurel in 1994. He was honored as an Edelman Laureate and by INFORMS in 2009 . He has also received First Prize in IFORS OR for Development Prize Competition in 1993 (first from India) . Now he is a member of the Franz Edelman Award Selection Team, INFORMS. Recently (2015), He was a judge in this competition. He is now institutionalizing a similar prize competition in India with IIMA.
His doctoral dissertation from Northwestern University (1991-96), funded from grants of NSF, USA, and AISI, led to the development of planning software, copyrighted, and licensed by Northwestern University, USA. This work was selected as one of the four finalists for EURO Excellence in Practice Award in Iceland in 2006.
He was the Vice President, President-Elect, and President of Operational Research Society of India(ORSI) during 2012-19 and has been elected as Fellow of the ORSI (2017) and selected as Distinguished Educator(2018) by ORSI .He is also a Fellow of Institution of Engineers India. He is now (2024) Sr. Members of INFORMS. He has chaired two International panels of juries of IFORS OR for Developing Countries Prize Contest (in 1999 and 2002) and was a member of this panel in 1996.
He is an Associate Editor of, IJRM,USA JORS(UK), OPSEARCH(India), He is one of the former Associate Editors of OMEGA and ITO and IJAA (INFORMS). He has published 52 papers in major international journals including MSOM (INFORMS), JORS,DSS, CAIE, IJPR, IJPE,JRPM, IJRM, JEMF, IJAA, JCEM (ASCE).
