Sarthak Bagchi

BIO

Sarthak Bagchi is a Political Scientist and researcher based in Ahmedabad. He is a doctoral scholar at the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies where he is pursuing a PhD in South Asian Studies. His research interests are in the everyday functioning of democracy in India, questions of political mobilization, comparative politics, party politics and informal politics, patronage and clientelism and global populism. He is particularly interested in exploring the maneuverings of state-society relations in everyday politics. He has published peer reviewed scholarly articles in academic journals like Economic and Political Weekly, Journal of Contemporary Asia and has contributed book chapters widely to edited volumes published by Duke University Press, Orient Blackswan, CSSSP and Sage publications among others. Besides academic publications, Sarthak also writes articles and political commentary write-ups on a regular basis for popular publications like – The Hindu, Indian Express, The Times of India, The India Forum, The wire.in, Outlook Magazine, Frontline Magazine etc. You can follow some of his popular writings here. He teaches courses on Indian Politics, Democracy and Global Populism in Ahmedabad.
